Saturday was the official day that Lionel Messi’s move to MLS club Inter Miami CF was finalized.
The forward from Argentina, who is 36 years old, has a two-and-a-half-year deal with an option for 2026.
Messi said, “I’m very excited to start this new part of my career with Inter Miami and in the U.S.” “This is a great chance, and we’ll keep building this beautiful project together. The goal is to work together to reach our goals, and I can’t wait to start helping out here in my new home.”
On Saturday, Inter Miami tweeted “Bienvenido” with a picture of Messi in a pink No. 10 shirt.
Messi will meet the people at an event on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
“We couldn’t be happier that the best player in the world chose Inter Miami CF and Major League Soccer,” MLS commissioner Don Garber said. “His choice is a sign of the momentum and energy behind our League and our sport in North America.” “We have no question that Lionel will show the world that the MLS can be a League of Choice for the best players in the game. We can’t wait to see him play for Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup later this month.”
Earlier reports said that Messi could make his Inter Miami start against Liga MX team Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup on July 21.
Messi is moving to Inter Miami after his two-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain ended.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner and 2022 FIFA World Cup winner is the most famous player ever to sign with an MLS team.
